About Us
Heritage’s program aims to change adolescent perceptions about the importance and value of remaining abstinent outside of marriage. The ultimate goal is two-fold: (1) to increase the proportion of adolescents abstaining from sexual activity and (2) to increase support for abstinence among the adults who influence them.
The Heritage Method© is an A-H consistent, multifaceted, systemic approach to increasing the proportion of adolescents avoiding non-marital sexual activity. The program’s design serves one or more community high schools and the middle schools that feed them, as well as the community around the school(s).
The central component of the school-based program is Heritage Keepers Abstinence Education I & II, a 450-minute high-impact interactive curriculum developed for middle and/or high schools. Most often classes are 45-minute sessions on each of ten sequential school days or 90-minute sessions for five consecutive days. This component is supplemental to normal classes, such as health education. The Heritage Method© school-based component also includes Heritage Keepers Life Skills Education, Levels I-V, a maintenance component. Each level covers a year, is taught after or during school, and has twelve lessons designed for classes that are least 45 minutes in length; 90 minutes are preferred to allow time for review and interaction.
The Heritage Method© community-based program is designed to expand character, relationship and abstinence-promotion activities beyond the classroom to the community. Community-based curricula include the Parent Component, Faith Component, Media Component and FACC Component. Community activities include interactive meetings in public settings and homes, a 30-minute infomercial promoting abstinence, radio and TV PSAs, and collaboration with state and local agencies.
